Even marginal deficiencies of certain nutrients, omega-3 fatty acids in particular, can influence intelligence, behavior (including violent acts), attention, depression and long term risk of cognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. Clinical studies using fish oil and multivitamins have shown decreased acts of violence within prison systems in the USA and the United Kingdom, improved test scores in those with learning disorders, and improved mood scores in those with depression. A recent study showed that one month of taking fish oil supplements improved cognitive functioning and mood scores.
